How I Lost 130 Pounds Naturally (Interview)
Hi! Tell us about yourself…why did you decide to start losing weight?
I have been overweight most of my life and the older I got, the bigger I got. Most of my younger years were spent putting family needs before my own self-care. I tried many diets, restrictions, and exercises but I was one to easily give up if I didn’t see results fast. It wasn’t until a year after I was told that I had type 2 diabetes that I finally was serious about changing my life.
I now enjoy spending my time in the gym or with my daughter. She is one of my biggest motivators. I want her to see that if you want something, you have to go out and get it. It takes patience and consistency but it is all worth the hard work.
What was your workout routine? Can you give us what a typical week looked like for you working out?
At the beginning of my journey, I stuck to long amounts of cardio. Some days it was more than an hour on the elliptical or some interval running on the treadmill. I slowly started to branch out to the machines and when I did I would split my workout and do half cardio half machines to equal two hours.

My current split is Push/Pull/Legs/Push/Pull/Legs) I try to take a rest day after one push/pull/legs but I usually still make it an active rest day by getting in extra cardio or full body HIIT. I enjoy going to the gym and I balance the amount of heavy strength training vs lightweight/higher reps. I also lowered the amount of cardio I do to about 20 minutes every other day.
What was your nutrition like? Can you give us what a typical day of eating looked like?
I am a firm believer that anything works if you put in the work. I personally enjoy flexible eating. I am not a good resource for nutrition because I eat whatever I want but in moderation. I do not count any calories or macros. I do not measure out my food. I simply just started eating better most days and found a love for working out.

How did you stay motivated to lose weight? Did you ever slip up?
The biggest thing to know is that it isn’t about motivation. Motivation comes and goes but when you learn to be disciplined you actually see change. Seeing other fitness pages on Instagram is motivating.
My daughter motivates me as well, but one of the biggest motivators is my own self. I have come a long way and watching all the old videos of my workouts, or seeing the pictures, reminds me how far I have come and how successful I have been with keeping the weight off.
When did you start to notice progress?
I started to notice the weight coming off instantly. It was gradually coming off at about 2-3 pounds a week. Of course, because I had lost and regained weight several times in the past, I was used to seeing the big drops in weight but after months and months of steadily losing a few lbs, I knew that I was going to KEEP it off this time. I didn’t allow the plateaus to get to me too much because I knew that my body was still changing even if the number wasn’t going down.
Did you use any sort of trackers/apps/scales to track your progress?
I weigh myself almost daily but I do not allow the number to affect my mood for the day. I use it as guidance to see where I am at. I aim to do InBody Scans at my local Supplement World to track my bf % and muscle once a month. On the first of every month, I also measure myself and take pictures. These have been the most effective for seeing results.
It doesn’t matter what the scale says. Focus on the Non-Scale Victories and compare your pictures for motivation.
What is your best advice to beginners who are looking to lose weight?
Keep going. It’s simple actually. If you mess up or fall off track, just keep going. Consistency is what is going to bring results.
