How I Lost 32 Pounds In 5 Months With The Keto Diet

Hi! Tell us about yourself…why did you decide to start losing weight?

Hi! I’m Maria. I started my weight loss journey in September. I’m a performer and before COVID, I was performing onboard the Disney Fantasy as a Main Stage Cast Member. A dream job. And then we were sent home very suddenly. This hit hard, and for months during quarantine, I sat around feeling sorry for myself and eating everything in sight.

Then there was a rumor we may be going back to the cruise in the fall and a light switched. The last thing I wanted was to embarrass myself and make extra work for our costume crew if they needed to alter my costumes due to weight gain, so I started keto. I stumbled across it and was blown away that it was ok to eat bacon and cheese, and still somehow lose weight. I had to try it!

What was your workout routine? Can you give us what a typical week looked like for you working out?

When I first started, I would use walking as my main exercise. Since I was unemployed and had nothing but free time, every afternoon I would go on a 2-3hr walk, usually getting in anywhere between 6-10miles. I also used this time to listen to keto podcasts, watch recipe videos on YouTube, and discover keto role models who inspired me to stay on track. This was great for both my mental and physical health. 

Now that it’s colder, my workouts are indoor, and I have limited space. I use my family’s old elliptical maybe twice a week, but zoom workout classes are my go-to. I have a few friends who are trainers are lead dance workout cardio classes that I take 3 times a week. 

Daily, I try to get in 100 squats, 100 arms circles with dumbbells, and at least 15mins of some kind of dance cardio. 

What was your nutrition like? Can you give us what a typical day of eating looked like?

The ketogenic/low carb lifestyle has really been working for me. I know people say it isn’t sustainable, but honestly, I have had absolutely zero problems sticking with it. Even though the holidays! No cheat days so far. Though that may change for my birthday.

I love that this diet is full of flavor. I don’t think it’s a secret that fatty foods are delicious. And Keto had become relatively mainstream these days, I find that with all the low carb substitutes for bread and pasta, I don’t feel deprived of anything. It’s just about making the right choices. I eat a lot of full-fat meat – wings, burgers, steak. And my favorite low carb veggies are spinach, broccoli, zucchini, and cauliflower. Oh, and I love cheese!

Lately, I’ve been experimenting with intermittent fasting. So I eat one big meal a day, usually around 1000cals, and then I’ll have another small snack before my eating window closes to round out my macros. My daily goals are:

Under 1400 Cals

At least 70g Protein

Under 120g Fat

Less than 18g Net Carbs 

And I have a 6hr eating window. 2-8 pm. 

I supplement with daily vitamins, magnesium, AVC, Collagen, and Omega 3.

How did you stay motivated to lose weight? Did you ever slip up?

Starting my keto Instagram page was the absolute best thing I ever did for my motivation and accountability. When I had a small page, it was just about posting for myself – having a cohesive place to post my meals, progress, and also get inspiration from other accounts. 

I truly never expected it to become more than that, but here we are 5 months later and my account has grown a ton, I’m interacting daily with low carb friends, leading challenges, doing brand deals, and I’m more motivated than ever. 

It’s a place I feel safe and can ask for help, and also help others. I was absolutely blown away when I saw other accounts were interested in what I was doing and trying, and even started following my advice and recipes.

Now that I’m comfortable with this way of eating, I’m also planning on trying out different versions of keto in the coming months! For example, Dairy-Free Clean Keto Vegetarian Keto High Protein Keto.

When did you start to notice progress?

The scale and mirror are extremely frustrating. Even at 30lbs down, I have a hard time seeing a difference some days. I used to weigh myself every morning and it would completely ruin my day if I was up from the day before. I would over-analyze what I ate to try and figure out what was going wrong when in reality, fluctuations are completely normal and nothing to stress over. Now I weigh once a week and it’s been so much better for my mindset.

I’d say my family noticed before I did. I didn’t tell anyone I was dieting or attempting to lose weight in case I failed, and once I dropped the first 20lbs, my mom started asking what I was doing. Everyone says to take progress pics. And they’re right. It’s so tough to take those before pics and I never want to look at them, but you’ll want them someday. 

I still have quite a few pounds to lose, but I can confidently say that I’m closer to my goals every day and have no plans to get off track. 

Did you use any sort of trackers/apps/scales to track your progress? 

I track my food intake with MFP. It’s taught me so much about the relationship between food and calories and how they work in my body. How many calories I need to feel full, and what macros make me feel my best and get results. It took some playing around with because different macro calculators will all say something different. You just need to find what works. 

I use MapMyWalk to track steps and calories for my walks, and Zero Fasting to time my fasting windows!! 

Do you have any weight loss “hacks” or “secrets” that helped you succeed?

I always start my day with 16oz of water. And anytime I’m feeling hungry, I drink 8oz of water and wait 20mins. Usually, I’m not actually hungry, just dehydrated. I never miss a day of electrolytes, collagen, and magnesium. 

Do you have any fitness books/podcasts/websites that you’d recommend and why?

I got most of my Keto knowledge from listening to YouTube videos during my walks. My favorite channels are Dr. Berg, Thomas DeLauer, KetoRewind, and KetoConnect

What is your best advice to beginners who are looking to lose weight?

You can’t be a success story until you start writing. 

It’s a journey for a reason. You won’t be motivated every day. You won’t lose weight every day. You may cheat or binge and that’s ok. As long as you get back on track. Overall consistency is the most important thing. My DMs are always open for questions, support, or anything else!
