How I Lost 40 Pounds in 10 Months With WW!

Hi! Tell us about yourself…why did you decide to start losing weight?

Losing weight wasn’t meant to be my journey. It was meant to be my husband’s. Erik came home with what I thought was another one of his crazy ideas. I was standing at the kitchen island and he said “I think I’m going to join WW will you do it with me?” If I’m being honest I was really only half listening to him so my response was “what did you say?” He told me that his company was offering it for 50% off monthly dues.

This wasn’t the first time he had come home with some crazy “diet” idea the only difference was that this was the first time I said ok. I could tell that he was serious about losing weight and that he really wanted me to do it with him. I was a little hesitant at first because I had a preconceived notion of what WW was and boy was I wrong. We jumped in with both feet. I printed out the zero-point food lists and started looking up recipes online. I completely changed what I was purchasing from DAY 1. There was a lot of google searching during that first week.

Erik had a goal; he knew what number he wanted to see on the scale. I didn’t! I was just being supportive (PS being supportive was a good decision). We have had a scale in our bathroom for years and I never used it. I didn’t think that I needed to. I remember opening the app and putting in 130 as a goal weight because I had to type in something. I was happy with myself “or so I thought”. I had never been anything other than a size 10-12 and was pretty convinced that I wasn’t built to be anything other than that.

I dropped the first 10 pounds pretty quickly which was completely shocking to me! People started to notice, I started to notice, my clothes started to get too big. By the time we went to Florida at the beginning of May I was down to a size 8 and felt really good and then the weight kept falling off. In December of 2018, I hit 40 lbs gone and was wearing a size 2….A freaking SIZE 2!!!! I don’t even think I was a size 2 in high school. I’m pretty sure I skipped right over that one. I think maintaining weight loss is a totally different mindset than losing weight. I have all of the tools I need to be healthy!

What was your workout routine? Can you give us what a typical week looked like for you working out?

My answer is either going to be very unpopular with people or give people hope.  I haven’t worked out AT ALL! I love the idea of working out, I just don’t love the act of working out! 

What was your nutrition like? Can you give us what a typical day of eating looked like?

I do follow WW!  A typical day for me is a cashew milk latte, light & fit yogurt, and a banana for breakfast, I meal prep our lunches on Sunday and they vary from week to week.  Some weeks it’s chicken bowls, sandwiches, wraps, chili, burgers.

I try to keep the points low for lunches so that I have plenty of room for dessert.  Dinners range from pizza, pasta, burgers, seafood, nothing is off-limits.  I just make sure I’m using extra lean meat and fresh veggies.  We cut out a lot of gluten and noticed having so much more energy and sleeping better.

I eat WAY more fresh fruit and veggies than I ever did before.

How did you stay motivated to lose weight? Did you ever slip up?

Having an almost 12 year old son keeps me motivated.  I can’t tell you how many times he has told his dad & I that he’s proud of us.  There wasn’t really a hard time for me but I think that is because I never struggled with food like others have and I’m so grateful for that. I think the great thing about WW is you don’t really “slip up”.  Yuu just eat what you want when you want and are more aware of what you’re putting in your body.

When did you start to notice progress?

I lost almost 10 pounds the first week and completely thought it was a mistake. I must have weighed myself like 4 times.  I remember going to work that Monday and everyone asked me if I was losing weight.  It was a really strange feeling but I think it really hit me when i had to run to Target during my lunch that week and purchase a belt because my pants were getting too big.

Did you use any sort of trackers/apps/scales to track your progress? 

The only app I use is the WW app.  It keeps me honest and on track to make sure i’m maintaining my weight loss.

Are there any other fitness products that you used frequently?

I put Vital Proteins collagen peptides in my coffee every morning but that’s it!

Do you have any weight loss “hacks” or “secrets” that helped you succeed?

There is no such thing as a quick tip.  For me WW is a lifestyle not a diet!  It’s knowing that you can have a cheeseburger and a beer on a Friday night with friends (pre-covid of course) and not stress about it. I do think that not being a big drinker did play a factor in our weight loss and we did cut out a lot of sugar and gluten. It’s having the tools to maintain a weight loss and to still live your life at the same time.  Maybe just don’t have a cheeseburger and beer every night of the week 😉 or do and work it into your day!

I think the biggest thing to remember is that there is no shortcut to losing weight and becoming healthy.  There are tons of programs and advertisements out there that will promise that you can lose weight quickly. Quick doesn’t work and quick comes back and then you feel discouraged and fall back into old habits. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is, if you have to ONLY purchase certain things in order to lose the weight, what happens when you stop purchasing those things, does the weight come back? The greatest part about WW is that I get to eat what I want and purchase my food wherever I want and no one tells me what to have or not have. I make those choices. My successes are mine!
