How I Lost Over 50 Pounds In 11 Months With Keto (Interview)

Hi! Tell us about yourself…why did you decide to start losing weight?

My name is Crystal Traux but you might all know me as CoachMeCrystal. I have been happily married to my wonderful husband Brian for 15 years, we have 2 beautiful sons Jacob and Carter, and 1 handsome fur baby Dexter. Some would call me a workaholic and they would be 100% right. Those 60 hour work weeks with no healthy lifestyle caught up to me though 3 years ago when I got to my heaviest weight ever at 182 pounds.

December 26th, 2017 was the day I looked at my husband and told him I can’t live this lifestyle anymore.

Enough is enough.

I decided to start a ketogenic lifestyle, which I followed strictly even when those 60 hour work weeks continued. I had a goal of 135 pounds and nothing was going to get in my way. My motivation stemmed from remembering how awful I felt when I was 182 pounds and all the health problems I was facing. Fast forward 3 years, I am still living a clean ketogenic lifestyle where I have successfully maintained my weight of 135 pounds.

This journey has changed my life for the better and that is why I want to help people achieve their own personal goals to help change theirs!

What was your workout routine? Can you give us what a typical week looked like for you working out?

I don’t know how many people can relate but I was and still am the person who struggles to find exercises that I truly enjoy! My son is a fantastic athlete who has always tried to help me in the gym with various strength training and cardio exercises, but I don’t enjoy them so it’s never consistent for me.

I stay very active by simply being a mother of 2 and I enjoy the times where I can unwind and practice yoga.

What was your nutrition like? Can you give us what a typical day of eating looked like?

Nutrition is a key part of my journey and was the main factor in me losing weight. As many people know, a ketogenic lifestyle consists of whole foods with low carbs and higher fats. I was on the road a lot for work in the first year of my journey. This meant eating out a lot which some people could find difficult but not with keto. I was able to know exactly what I could order and couldn’t order.

I ate a lot of salads, proteins, eggs, and quick eats which included a lot of meats & cheeses. These were all huge staples for me on the road. At home, I meal prepped a lot for my family. Every Sunday I was in the kitchen making new keto recipes that I had found online and the majority of the foods were casserole-based. After a year into my journey, I started taking Pruvit’s Exogenous Ketone Supplements and the speed of my weight loss and ability to maintain my desired weight increased drastically. I continue to take my keto supplements daily.

How did you stay motivated to lose weight? Did you ever slip up?

Losing weight and changing your lifestyle requires mental toughness, so I knew I needed to work on my mind. I began meditating, making daily affirmations, practicing gratitude, and working on self-love through podcasts and youtube videos. I decided a life coach would be beneficial for me so I worked with one for 6 months where we worked on me, giving myself time to heal and overcome bad habits.

I never gave up, sure I had a few “cheat” days but they were never consistent and I always got back on course. I also surrounded myself with like-minded motivational people who kept me encouraged and hungry for success.

When did you start to notice progress?

A healthy weight loss should be gradual! I started noticing changes around the 12-week mark where my clothes were fitting a bit loose and I started having more energy. All my weight wasn’t put on in a short amount of time and therefore it didn’t come off in a short amount of time either!

A big moment for me was putting on my bikini for the first time and enjoying what I see in the mirror! Before you wouldn’t catch me at the beach in a bikini. I always had to be covered up. So the day where I could be confident in one was a huge moment for me. Over my 11-month weight loss journey, I lost 52 pounds and went from a 14/16 to a 4/6.

Did you use any sort of trackers/apps/scales to track your progress?

I tracked my food using the app Carb Manager. This app was great for keto focused people because there is an emphasis on how many carbs you were at during the day and how many you should be having.

I genuinely don’t like the scale and I truly believe that the number you see should not be your only means of success. I believe in non-scale victories like fitting into your goal jeans, having to go to the next notch on your belt because your pants won’t stay up, or even going down in ring size. Your body will show you the weight loss if you stay committed and trust the process.

Do you have any fitness “hacks” or “secrets” that helped you succeed?

My #1 hack that I stand behind 100% is Exogenous Ketones by Pruvit. These were amazing for breaking my plateau after several months, plus they helped control cravings and boost energy. They have a ton of health benefits that I can’t say enough about! Definitely recommend it.

What is your best advice to beginners who are looking to lose weight?

  1. DO NOT START A DIET: I know I decided to start a keto lifestyle 3 years ago and some might say that is a diet but for me, it was a complete lifestyle change. I enjoy eating low carb and for me it is sustainable. Find a way of eating that you enjoy and works for you.
  2. REMOVE TIMELINES: It’s your life. Why are you rushing to get a perfect body in 30 days? It doesn’t work like that. Take away those unrealistic time frames and you will be successful.
  3. MINDSET IS KEY: Working on making your mind strong will allow every other part of your body to follow suit. When life throws you curveballs it is easier to follow what feels comfortable for you, but this won’t get you to your goals. Having a strong mindset will not let anything get in the way of your goals.

Do you have any fitness books/podcasts/websites that you’d recommend and why?

I encourage you to read and educate yourself on anything you start for your fitness journey. I feel like I’ve read every possible keto book there is and it has helped to educate me on what keto actually does for my body. Knowing facts will help you in life especially living in a world where people will challenge you.
