How I Lost 50 Pounds In 8 Months With WW

Hi! Tell us about yourself…why did you decide to start losing weight?

I decided to join WW in July of 2018 – in June of that year I went to Greece for a wedding, and it was there I realized how much weight I had put on. I was 28 years old and could barely do a day trip of sightseeing with my girlfriends without getting exhausted and having to sit down! I felt miserable inside and out. All of the pictures we were taking I was truly mortified by how I looked – I couldn’t believe it was me in the photos.

For most of 2017 and 2018 I was partying a ton, not caring what I put in my body, and never thought twice about my health. The booze and all the bar food was finally catching up to me. I knew if I didn’t make a change then, I would just continue to spiral downwards. I signed up for WW the week I got home.

In my first week of WW, I was so scared! I tried my best to follow the diet, but it was such a big change for me. I was just over 200lbs when I first weighed in. I couldn’t believe I saw a 2 in front of my weight, so much I started crying. I was terrified of weighing in after week 1, but when I did I had lost 1.4lbs. It’s a moment I’ll never forget- because it was then I knew I could do it and was so determined to continue to lose weight. I was so motivated by how good I felt week after week of eating right and treating my body well.

What was your workout routine? Can you give us what a typical week looked like for you working out?

My workout routine was very simple – I took 3-4 classes at Flywheel a week. It is a 45-minute spin class. I am obsessed with spin and it was the perfect amount of time for me. That really helped me shed the weight originally. 

Now, with the pandemic, I have started to do strength training in my apartment. I have 8lb weights and do strength classes on the Peloton app. I do notice a big change in my body now that I am doing strength training as opposed to just straight cardio. My muscles are more defined and I love feeling stronger! I take 30-minute full-body classes 4-5 times a week. 

What was your nutrition like? Can you give us what a typical day of eating looked like?

Even though I am at my goal weight I still follow the WW diet. I eat a ton of eggs, beans, veggies, and grilled protein. I don’t count calories or take any supplements, but I feel like I probably should take vitamins. I just haven’t been able to research it enough! A typical day of eating for me looking like this:

Breakfast: 2 fried eggs over 2 slices of light bread, topped with everything but the bagel seasoning, and of course coffee with stevia and almond milk.

Snack: Sliced apple with 2 tbsp of PB2 powder

Lunch: Big salad – romaine lettuce with black beans, tomatoes, onions, broccoli, celery (whatever veggies are in my fridge) with either grilled chicken or shrimp

Snack: a bag of WW brand chips and some fruit!

Dinner: It’s always some sort of protein, whether salmon, steak, or chicken with brown rice and roasted veggies. 

Dessert: Enlightened ice cream bar!

How did you stay motivated to lose weight? Did you ever slip up?

Of course, I slipped up! It’s definitely tough. I got weighed every week at the WW studio, so there were weeks where I would be up a few pounds and be upset but not let it derail my progress. I would think back to what I did differently that week and what made me unsuccessful. In cases like that, I would just go back to the basics next week. I would drink my water, and try to go back to recipes that I know work for me! 

Another thing that really stuck with me as I read somewhere that even if you go off-plan and have a “bad” meal, don’t use it as an excuse to binge eat all day. It’s ok to have a cheat meal but just back on track for the next meal!

When did you start to notice progress?

When I was down 30lbs that’s when I really started to notice my weight loss. My clothes were starting to become too big to wear, my pants were falling, and I felt AMAZING. I was also doing better in my spin classes!

Did you use any sort of trackers/apps/scales to track your progress? 

I use the WW to track my food, and my Apple Watch to track my workouts. The watch is good because it motivates me to get up and go for a walk and also make sure I get at least 30 minutes of exercise.

Are there any other fitness products that you used frequently?

I use the Peloton app for workouts! I love it.

Do you have any weight loss “hacks” or “secrets” that helped you succeed?

I drink at least 100oz of water a day. That really helped curb my snacking and it flushed me out constantly. I also would plan. If I knew I was going out for a meal I would look at the menu ahead of time and pick out what I was going to get to stay on track!

What is your best advice to beginners who are looking to lose weight?

Just do it! Try it for one week. It will change your life. You will realize how good you feel when you treat your body right. That feeling to me is addicting – having energy and losing weight!
