How I Lost 85 Pounds In 18 Months With Keto

Hi! Tell us about yourself…why did you decide to start losing weight?

I started my weight journey first back in 2016. I had always been overweight and enough was enough. I started working out at home doing Insanity and started focusing on eating more healthy whole foods. I lost a total of 50 pounds and was feeling good. I was in a toxic relationship and let my partner tear me down to where I didn’t care anymore about feeling good. I barely felt anything at all. I started gaining the weight back and before I knew it I was 300 pounds.

In 2019 I decided once again to take control and started a ketogenic diet. My why was myself. I was finally going to put myself first and do whatever it took to feel good about myself again. Those first weeks were very difficult. It’s hard breaking old habits, but I was so motivated to do this for myself and for my parents who also started Keto. I just remember sitting there one day so uncomfortable and unhappy with how I felt and how I looked and I couldn’t take it anymore.

What was your workout routine? Can you give us what a typical week looked like for you working out?

For the first 6 months, I only focused on my diet and was dropping weight. I finally decided to add in exercise to help shape my body and take my journey to the next level. I got into a great routine of working out from home using Leslie Sansone’s walk at home program. I religiously worked out 5-6 days a week doing her program at home. I typically worked out on my lunch break or after work.

I also added in resistance training with a resistance band and booty bands at home. It wasn’t until 2020 that I joined my local gym. I have been working with a trainer on adding in a more catered routine around weights and full-body workouts. The best advice is to remember you have to start somewhere. I wasn’t good when I started and I still struggle, but consistency makes a big difference. Nothings going to change if you don’t do something different.

What was your nutrition like? Can you give us what a typical day of eating looked like?

I have followed a ketogenic diet for the last year and a half. A typical day of eating is coffee for breakfast, some type of meat for lunch, and then a meat and veggie for dinner. I struggle with snacking sometimes, but there are so many good keto options and even keto bakeries now that help with sweet cravings.

I use the Carb Manager app to track my macros and typically try to stay under 20 net grams of carbs. I take a thyroid supplement as I have hypothyroidism and I also take an electrolyte supplement. I have found Keto to work for me, but what’s most important is to just find what works. Don’t worry about the current fads or what someone else says will work. Everyone’s body is different and I’ve had success doing what works for me!

How did you stay motivated to lose weight? Did you ever slip up?

Motivation is fleeting and it has definitely been a struggle at times. It has come down to determination and consistency for me. I try to remember the why behind why I started and that helps to keep me going. Also, seeing progress is addicting. When you start to lose weight and feel better physically it makes you want more.

Mental health is just as important, if not more important than physical health. I do a lot of journaling, meditation, and even therapy to help keep my mind in a positive place. It’s easy to think negatively and focus on what you don’t have or what you lack, but bringing your mind back to what you are capable of and what you have achieved has helped me to stay on track.

When did you start to notice progress?

For me, it was a gradual realization that I had made progress. Things started to fit looser and my body physically was feeling better. I remember one day walking past my reflection in a store and actually being happy with who I saw. The outside was starting to match the inside and that was inspiring.

Being able to buy clothes outside of the plus-size section was a big moment for me. That’s something I can’t remember ever being able to do. It felt so empowering and motivating to be able to buy something without having to go somewhere special.

Did you use any sort of trackers/apps/scales to track your progress?

I track my weight, water intake, and food using the Carb Manager app as well as my FitBit. My FitBit really helps as a visual to track my progress and my daily activity.

Carb Manager really helps me with keto to know exactly where I am at for my macros daily.

Do you have any weight loss “hacks” or “secrets” that helped you succeed?

Intermittent fasting really helped to boost my weight loss and curb cravings or wanting to mindlessly eat in the evenings.

Do you have any fitness books/podcasts/websites that you’d recommend and why?

Ethan Suplee has an amazing podcast around weight loss and I’d also recommend checking out The Big Fat Life Podcast.

What is your best advice to beginners who are looking to lose weight?

Don’t overthink it. It can be daunting when you have a significant amount of weight to lose. Just start. Having goals and a plan is a great way to enhance your journey, but you just have to do it to get started.

Start moving your body a little more each day, start incorporating healthier foods, and eliminating processed foods and sugar. You don’t have to have an elaborate plan to get started. One day at a time.
