How This Mom Lost 61 Pounds In 2 Years With the Keto Diet

Hi! Tell us about yourself…why did you decide to start losing weight?

I have been overweight/obese my entire life. I can remember as a child not being able to keep up with my friends during play because I would give out of breath. I can remember shopping in the plus-size section of department stores as early as middle school. I reached my highest weight of over 320 (stopped weighing after seeing that number on the scale) in 2015, but it was not until 2017 I decided to embark on a health journey.

In 2017, I figured out how to lose weight without using any programs or special products. It was truly through hard work and dedication. I lost close to 90 pounds by April of 2018 and then discovered I was pregnant with my third child. I then let go of all the healthy habits I had developed and gained the weight back plus more! I had my son in January 2019 weighing in at 310 pounds the day I went into labor. I started back on the path of healthy living in February 2019. I have since lost 61 pounds.

What was your workout routine? Can you give us what a typical week looked like for you working out?

Currently I workout between 4-5 days out of the week. I love cardio! Running on the treadmill is my passion at the moment but I have added weight lifting to the mix. My average time on the treadmill is between 45-1.5 hours depending on my mood. I also use videos on YouTube to help with strength training since I am new to that area and I also enjoy doing dance cardio videos on YouTube as well.

When it comes to working out it is very important to find what you love to do! I love fast pace and dancing so cardio is what keeps my interest! As long as you are enjoying the movements you’re doing exactly what you need to do when it comes to exercise!

What was your nutrition like? Can you give us what a typical day of eating looked like?

I have tried a couple of different things when it comes to an eating lifestyle. At first, I was just counting calories and that worked great. The pandemic hit and I needed something a little simpler so I decided to give WW a chance, and I loved it! It was similar to counting calories but it was easier to use because of the program and tracking system WW provided. I noticed that I was not using the app as much so I stopped my membership with WW and since then I have been living a Ketogenic lifestyle.

I was previously a vegetarian but have added poultry back into my diet. I only eat 20g net carbs daily and drink 150 ounces of water daily. I use the Carb Manager app to track my carbs and other macros. Keto has been a game-changer for sure! I love the food you can eat, the creativity it has, and I do not feel deprived of anything!

How did you stay motivated to lose weight? Did you ever slip up?

I love the saying, “Being overweight is hard and losing weight is hard…choose your hard!” And it is so true! It is so hard either way, but one must figure out what are the benefits of the hards! Losing weight has been so much more than just physical for me. It is changing my entire self. I am learning things about myself I never knew along with confidence like no other. I am not perfect but when I do have an off day…or week I remind myself why it’s important to me to continue to fight to live a better life.

Many of my reasons are for health and my family. I want to be an example to my children that fitness can be fun! Eating healthy is fun! Every day will not be sunshine and rainbows. Some days you will wake up and think about what is the point, but you must remember why you started and why you must continue!

When did you start to notice progress?

After having my son, the biggest indicator of my progress was the way pre-baby clothes fit on me. It was nothing more exciting than to fit into pre-baby jeans.

I use the scale more for data because the scale can play mind tricks on you so it’s best to find other meaningful ways to track your progress. I use clothes, pictures, and how I am feeling to track my true progress.

Did you use any sort of trackers/apps/scales to track your progress?

I currently use the CarbManager app to track my carbs and macros. I love the app. Most products’ barcodes can be scanned and added to the app! So simple!

Do you have any weight loss “hacks” or “secrets” that helped you succeed?

WATER! Water is such a great “hack” to helping stay consistent with your eating. Sometimes we think we are hungry when really all we need is water and a walk!

What is your best advice to beginners who are looking to lose weight?

Do it for YOU and OUT OF LOVE! Not for someone else or love! You must focus on your mind first before journeying into the physical. If the mind isn’t ready, the physical part will be so hard to do.

Write down reasons to want to change and write down things you love about yourself and repeat them daily. I did this for the first 6 months of my journey and it made such a difference.

Where can we find more about you?

Instagram! Please give me a follow @reewriting__mystory (2 underscores!) I post my entire journey there and I am so open and honest. I love connecting with others who are on similar journeys like mine.
