How This Mom Lost 45 Pounds In 1.5 Years With Weight Watchers

Hi! Tell us about yourself…why did you decide to start losing weight?

Honestly, my weight has been up and down since I had my first child in my 20’s. I had always resorted to the idea that I needed to “diet” to lose weight and I would but soon as I went back to my old way of eating I would eventually gain it all back! One day a friend of mine suggested we join WW online together and said why not.

I did lose weight but I didn’t stick with it and quickly gained it all back! Then one day about a year later I decided I was sick of being overweight and wanted to do something about it for the last time. Somehow something flipped a switch in my thinking and I didn’t view this journey as a temporary diet but as a lifestyle change.

I started following WW accounts on Instagram for inspiration, tips & recipes. I love to cook and eat so I began to realize I could take all the foods I love and make them healthier, lower in calories & lower in points so that I’d never feel deprived. I eventually started my own Instagram accountability page to share my food ideas with others looking for inspiration like I was.

What was your workout routine? Can you give us what a typical week looked like for you working out?

Actually, I haven’t formally worked out at all during my weight loss journey. I knew eating was my main issue and knew I needed to get that under control first! I also knew if I tried to alter my mindset about food and excise at the same time I’d probably become overwhelmed and give up. I enjoy walking, hiking & kayaking for physical activity & fun, but nothing formal. 

What was your nutrition like? Can you give us what a typical day of eating looked like?

I follow WW formally Weight Watchers. I’m on the Blue Plan. I have a given number of daily and weekly points to use. I usually like to have lower point breakfasts & lunches, saving the majority of my points for the evenings. I usually save my weekly points for the weekend and/or going out.

The only supplements I take on a regular are collagen & turmeric for my joints.

How did you stay motivated to lose weight? Did you ever slip up?

It hasn’t always been easy but I knew I wanted to make a change that lasted forever this time. I realized that having a slice of cake, a couple of drinks, or tracking every meal while on vacation wasn’t going to undo all the hard work I put in.

I just enjoy it and move on to the next meal. I don’t wait and say tomorrow or next Monday I’ll get back on track, I indulge, enjoy, and get right back on track for the next meal. One of the things I love about WW is that nothing is off-limits! You can make anything fit into your points and if you go over for the track it and move forward!

When did you start to notice progress?

The first way I noticed progress was the number on the scale going down. At first, It seemed like it would never amount to anything! Around 20lbs other people started noticing and that just fueled me more! I loved being able to feel better in my clothes!

Eventually, it led to having to buy smaller clothes but nothing felt better than feeling comfortable in my own skin! The first time I realized I could share clothes with my 16-year-old daughter I was blown away! 

Did you use any sort of trackers/apps/scales to track your progress? 

I used the WW app to track all my meals. I can’t say enough about the WW app. It makes it so easy! The barcode scanner it has that you can use while shopping is one of my favorite features! I love that I can see a new product when out shopping and instantly know its point value! 

I also heavily rely on a digital food scale. I weigh all my food!

Do you have any weight loss “hacks” or “secrets” that helped you succeed?

When looking at recipes I think is there anything I could swap out in this recipe to make it more point-friendly or lower in calories. EX: sugar for monk fruit, greek yogurt for sour cream, etc.

Do you have any fitness books/podcasts/websites that you’d recommend and why?

Instagram has been my biggest resource! There are so many amazing people in this community that have awesome ideas to share and are an inspiration! 

What is your best advice to beginners who are looking to lose weight?

Just do it! Start today don’t wait till next week or until you think the time is right. Start today every small change you make is progress. It’s not a race it’s a journey, your journey, and no one else’s!
