How I Lost 36 Pounds In 5 Months With Slimming World

Hi! Tell us about yourself…why did you decide to start losing weight?

I’ve always struggled with my weight from being around 18 years old. It was always so easy to grab a takeaway as I work long hours in health care. It was around 2015 when we started to notice difficulty in conceiving a baby. We decided to seek help from a fertility specialist who advised me that I needed to lose weight before any treatment would be considered. I left the clinic feeling devastated and knew then that it was time to start and eat a healthier lifestyle to enable me the best chance of becoming a mum. This was in October 2019 that my weight loss journey began.  

What was your workout routine? Can you give us what a typical week looked like for you working out?

I didn’t do any workouts really, to be honest, I would occasionally go spinning but that wasn’t often or swimming. My main aim was that I did 10 thousand steps a day.

What was your nutrition like? Can you give us what a typical day of eating looked like?

I joined slimming world in October 2019 and followed their plan. I enjoyed making a lot of ‘fakeaways’ as this always curbed the cravings, such as healthier burgers, curries, etc. I always had ⅓ of vegetables on my plate and weighed/measured things like pasta, cereal, cheese, etc. I didn’t take any supplements.

When lockdown came I really struggled to stay motivated. I then made the decision to change my plan and I went to an online coach for help, he then gave me calories to follow and I tracked this using my fitness pal. I aim to eat 1900 calories a day which works really well as no food is off-limits. I can enjoy whatever I fancy and still lose weight.

How did you stay motivated to lose weight? Did you ever slip up?

From lockdown 2020 I found it really hard to stay motivated, it was a nightmare to get a good shop and a really challenging time. I found that writing everything down, my meal plans, my feelings, everything helped me so much. I also use Instagram (@emilys.journey_x) as a tool to post all my meals and connect with people on similar journeys. This kept me going as I gained extra support and encouragement.

When did you start to notice progress?

I started to notice after a couple of weeks, my clothes started to fit better. Then when I did comparison photos after a month or so I could see a huge difference in my appearance.

Did you use any sort of trackers/apps/scales to track your progress? 

Instagram was the perfect tool for me. I also attended support groups at slimming world either physically or virtually! I weighed myself once a week and tracked that in my diary.

I purchased a 12-week food diary/journal from happy little print which was a great visual tool for keeping me on track and accountable  

Do you have any weight loss “hacks” or “secrets” that helped you succeed?

Plenty of water a day helps and getting out for my walks. I think because I kept moving it kept the weight coming off. I also found to have smaller portions and don’t eat for the sake of it. If I wasn’t hungry I wouldn’t force myself to eat.  

What is your best advice to beginners who are looking to lose weight?

I would say don’t be afraid to start. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. You didn’t gain a stone in a day and you won’t lose a stone a day. Be patient with yourself, find the best plan that works for you, and give it your best. Don’t turn a bad day into a bad week and never follow an unhealthier meal with another.

Buy a diary so you can plan your meals and keep a track of what you’re consuming daily. Remember slow and steady wins the race and if I can do it, you certainly can! You’re capable of anything.
