How I Lost 70 Pounds In 1 Year With WW

Hi! Tell us about yourself…why did you decide to start losing weight?

I have been overweight for about twenty years. I never thought I could lose weight and then I followed my friend’s WW Instagram out of support and realized what she was eating were all the things I would eat. I sat and toyed with the idea of starting my own WW journey for months. I had asked my cousin who I knew had success on WW a million questions as well as a friend of mine. Feeling like I could do this I decided to give it a try. My cousin gave me a free month and I said if I didn’t like it after that, I’d cancel. 

I knew that I no longer wanted to look back at photographs of myself and hate the memories I wanted so badly to love. I wanted my future self to love the moment I get engaged, love the moment I get married, I want to be a fun and active mom one day. I didn’t want to be embarrassed by myself at the biggest moments I have coming up in my life.

What was your workout routine? Can you give us what a typical week looked like for you working out?

I honestly don’t work out all that much. I’ve done a couple of yoga classes, I walk my dog and in the warm weather, my boyfriend and I take our dog on hikes. That is the extent of my working out for right now. I try and stay active by walking my dog but right now I am doing a step bet which is a great way I’ve found to get me motivated to move my body a lot more. I am very focused on getting to my goal right now, about 1lb away and I know that I will want to tone up from there. 

I used to work out with trainers before doing WW so I know I am strong and I know I like to weight train, it’s just a matter of me having to set myself up now to make that happen.

What was your nutrition like? Can you give us what a typical day of eating looked like?

I follow WW (formerly Weight Watchers) and I am on their green plan & started on February 10, 2020. I took their quiz on your lifestyle and goals and it said green would be best for me so that’s what I’ve stuck to. I would like to try the other plans but since I’ve seen success on green and am not someone who loves change, I have not taken the jump yet.

I eat almost every kind of food! Chicken is my favorite protein to eat for sure I think I have it a few times a week in different forms. I really enjoy most foods though –  I eat pasta, ice cream, beef, rice, potatoes, and I’ve lost 70lbs doing it. I love the WW plan for that reason, I’ve had dessert every night and have lost weight, I don’t feel the need to restrict myself because I fit what I want into my points.

How did you stay motivated to lose weight? Did you ever slip up?

Losing weight is hard and I started this right before Covid hit and lockdown started (I live in New Jersey) and from March until July my job was closed and I was home. It was not easy but planning everything out and realizing this was the one thing I could control made it easier. I was nervous when I went back to work that I might have a hard time but I’ve found a great groove in what I’m doing to keep this up.

Of course, I have had days where I haven’t wanted to track but the results have kept me driven & my goal has kept me driven. I enjoyed the holidays, a shore trip, my birthday, and a night out here and there. I’ve learned to balance and not stress and I think that is because I know for a fact I have the tools to lose any weight that comes back on.

When did you start to notice progress?

I started noticing around 4 months into my journey that my clothes were fitting differently. I saw the number on the scale since day 1 go down but mentally I do struggle with body dysmorphia a bit now where I struggle to see it when I look in the mirror. Pictures have helped me battle that big time. 

I’ve gotten emotional when I hit 50lbs, 60lbs, and most recently 70lbs. It made me cry out of pride. I’ve never been fit or in a healthy weight range so to have done this and love tracking and cooking and all the changes I’ve made is an amazingly overwhelming feeling of pride.

Did you use any sort of trackers/apps/scales to track your progress? 

I use the WW app to track all my food and in July I got an Apple Watch and started tracking my movements. My boyfriend and I took our dog on a lot of hikes and walks over the summer so I really enjoyed seeing how much I am moving. Since getting the Apple Watch to track my movement I’ve done 3 step bets to push myself a bit more and really enjoy seeing what movements I make a day.  

Do you have any weight loss “hacks” or “secrets” that helped you succeed?

Weigh your food. That is my biggest takeaway. I weigh almost everything I eat and it has made my portion control be under control. That has always been my issue but weighing everything out helps me get the most out of my points and gives me peace of mind to know what I’m doing is right.

Do you have any fitness books/podcasts/websites that you’d recommend and why?

I honestly just use my WW Instagram to follow people for their food ideas and to see if they have any “hacks”. Following an account is how I started and I think it is the best way to learn. There are so many people to follow and everyone eats differently so it is nice to see you can do this no matter what.

What is your best advice to beginners who are looking to lose weight?

Just start. Don’t wait. My only regret is not doing this years ago. I was always timid and never spoke about my weight to anyone until I decided I wanted to make a change.
