PCOS – How I Lost 30 Pounds In 3 Months With WW

Hi! Tell us about yourself…why did you decide to start losing weight?

Hi! My name is Katie and I started my weight loss journey about 3 months ago. I struggle with PCOS, polycystic ovarian syndrome, which partly causes me to struggle with weight gain. Back in the fall, I was the heaviest I had ever been and I knew something needed to change. I was anxious, depressed, eating out of control portions, and not living my life to the fullest because of my weight. I did not want to live that way anymore.

I have my wedding coming up in May so that was a huge motivator for me, as well as getting my overall health in check. I remember when I first stepped on the scale after a week of trying my hardest at this new lifestyle change. I had lost about 6 lbs! I realized then that I was capable of losing the weight and was moving in the right direction. It made me, in a way, crave this new way of life I was beginning for myself.

What was your workout routine? Can you give us what a typical week looked like for you working out?

I am new to my weight loss journey. I actually do not work out! I have a pretty active job and lifestyle where I am on my feet a lot, but I have not actively worked out while losing the weight. I surely would like to start incorporating fitness into my journey now that I have lost about 30 pounds simply just from watching what I eat. I would love to start with low-intensity interval training and begin toning some of my problem areas! 

What was your nutrition like? Can you give us what a typical day of eating looked like?

I follow the WW Blue program. I am not hugely into other diet programs or restrictive eating habits because they simply did not work for me. Trust me- I have tried everything. I tried everything from keto to calorie counting to gluten/dairy-free and nothing was sustainable for me and my body. Everyone is different. I wanted to try the new WW program because I wanted to focus on eating lots of whole foods, while also controlling my portion sizes. This helps me eat lots of all-natural fruits, vegetables, meats, and low-fat dairy products.

I have learned to swap out my craving with healthier options so I never really feel like I am missing anything! Also- my fiance eats what I eat so I did not want to do anything where I would have to make two dinners every night. He loves what I make at home and he is even losing a little bit of weight too! I also take Vitamin B and D supplements prescribed by my doctor, as well as Ovasitol to help regulate my hormones naturally due to my PCOS.

How did you stay motivated to lose weight? Did you ever slip up?

I know this may sound silly, but I weigh myself every morning. Even after a not so good day, I weigh myself. It helps me to see how my weight fluctuates on a day to day basis, as well as allowing me to look at the bigger picture. I remind myself that I am down 30 lbs! I like to compare the weight lost to things in the real world, like how that’s about 2-15 lb bowling balls gone!

I remember how I felt before and think of how I am already halfway to my goal of -50lbs! Every day isn’t easy, but it is so worth it. Hearing people say “you look good!” and “are you losing weight?” is a huge motivator for me. It lets me realize that what I am doing is paying off.

When did you start to notice progress?

I began to notice progress after I edited a “Face to Face Friday” post for Instagram. I was down about 25 lbs at that point but had not noticed any changes physically. I was shocked to see what a difference there was in my face! It made me even more motivated to continue on my journey. 

Did you use any sort of trackers/apps/scales to track your progress? 

I track everything in the WW app that comes with the subscription. It helps me stay on track throughout the day, create recipes, find point values for different foods, and track my weight loss. I track my steps every day with my Apple Watch!

Are there any other fitness products that you used frequently?

My food scale and gallon-sized water bottle have helped tremendously with staying on track with portion control and getting my water intake in for the day!

Do you have any weight loss “hacks” or “secrets” that helped you succeed?

Track everything, even the bad stuff. Stick to it, you may not see progress right away, but you WILL start to feel better soon. Set micro-goals. Instead of saying “I want to lose 50 lbs” start with maybe 10 lbs, and check off those micro-goals as you go!

You will feel much more accomplished and happy with the progress you are making instead of feeling like 50 lbs down is 100 miles away. 

Do you have any fitness books/podcasts/websites that you’d recommend and why?

I love to follow AlaniNu fitness on Instagram, as well as tons of other WW accounts. I search WW Blue Plan on Instagram and then follow anyone on the same journey that I feel would keep me motivated and excited about the weight loss. Pinterest is great too for recipes and workout inspiration!  

What is your best advice to beginners who are looking to lose weight?

What are you waiting for?! Leap! I did and now I am only 20 lbs away from my goal. That can be you too! I often think about the wasted time I felt unhappy in my own skin when I could have been doing something. I wish someone was there to tell me to leap. What is there to lose? (other than the weight of course 🙂
